Wayne awarded Wild Card for Soweto Open

Congratulations to South African junior Wayne Montgomery ranked number 8 in the world who has been granted a wildcard for the Soweto Open Challenger which will get underway in Soweto next week.

Wayne is a learner at Paul Roos Gymnasium.

Wilson Cup Challenge

Tennis teams from around the country met at the Sun City tennis courts for the annual Wilson Cup Challenge with 16 girls and 18 boys teams vying for the trophies. Trinityhouse High school once again fielded both a girls and boys team – the boys being the defending champions. However this was the year for the girls to bring home the silverware after seeing off Middleburg HTS school in the finals. Their boys team kept the school flag flying high by coming in at 3rd place.

Sun City Annual Private Schools

Tennis players from Gauteng’s independent schools descended on the Sun City tennis complex for the 7th edition of the annual Private Schools Tennis Tournament last weekend. Seventeen schools competed this year, fielding 30 teams between them.

Girls Champions – St Mary’s School Waverley

St Benedict’s College, Bedfordview and and St Mary’s, Waverley successfully defended their respective Boys A and Girls A sectional titles. It was St Benedict’s third consecutive title defence, while St Mary’s won the girls’ crown for the second year in a row.

Newcomers win Wayne Ferreira Title

The annual Wayne Ferreira Challenge Tennis Tournament hosted by Parktown Boys High school was held last week. The tournament is named after Wayne Ferreira, a Parktown old boy who was a top-ranked international player and who still holds the international record for playing in the most consecutive Grand Slam tournaments.

Eight schools competed, including newcomers Curro Durbanville from Cape Town, who took the title in the end, beating Durban’s Glenwood Boys’ 5-2 in the final.

The defending champions, Hoerskool Stellenbosch, were eliminated in the semi-final stage by the eventual winners, while Glenwood beat St Benedict’s in the other semi.

The Curro Durbanville team comprised: Rudi van der Merwe, Okkie Kellerman, Kris van Wyk, Anthony Scholtz, Francois Kellerman, JD Malan and Calvin Jordaan. Elizma Schoonees was Coach.

Wayne jets off to Europe

Our top junior player, Wayne Montgomery is one of 16 young players chosen to join an international tennis tour to Europe this summer. Stellenbosch’s Montgomery (he attends Paul Roos Gymnasium) is the only South African in the eight boys and eight girls announced by the ITF Development Department this week.

The teenager is the second ranked player on the continent and won the ITF/CAT African Closed Junior in March. He reached the second round of the Aussie Open juniors this year and also played Junior Wimbledon. He has also represented South Africa in the Junior Davis Cup.

The team is known as the International 18&U ITF/GSDF Team and the tour will last eight weeks. Activities start on 10 May and end on 8 July. While on tour the team will visit five different countries and features the junior version of the year’s second and third Grand Slam events, the French Open at Roland Garos, Paris and Wimbledon in England. The trip is financed by the Grand Slam Development Fund (GSDF), which provides players not only with the opportunity to take part in top level international competition but also the invaluable experience of travelling abroad as part of a team under the guidance of an ITF coach. The team will be accompanied by four ITF team coaches: Ivan Molina (Colombia), Roberta Burzagli (Brazil), Frank Zlesak (Czech Repubic) and Dermot Sweeney (Zambia).

Hosts Oranje Meisies win Trophy

The winning 2012 Amanda Coetzer Girls High School Challenge played in Bloemfontein this past weekend were Oranje Meisies Skool who beat Stellenbosch High School 5-3 in the final. This was the first time in the 15 year history of the tournament that the hosts Oranje Meisies Skool have lifted the trophy.

Saints come out on Top

The first St Stithians Invitational Easter Tennis Festival was played over a three-day period as part of the Saints Easter Sports Festival. The tournament followed a round-robin format, will all six participating schools competing against each other in singles and doubles.

The teams competed for the Kevin Anderson Trophy, named after Kevin Anderson, who is a former St Stithians Boys’ Prep and St Stithians Boys’ College pupil.

As an added bonus to the organisers, St Stithians were the first winners of the trophy! Final results were as follows:
