Newcomers win Wayne Ferreira Title

The annual Wayne Ferreira Challenge Tennis Tournament hosted by Parktown Boys High school was held last week. The tournament is named after Wayne Ferreira, a Parktown old boy who was a top-ranked international player and who still holds the international record for playing in the most consecutive Grand Slam tournaments.

Eight schools competed, including newcomers Curro Durbanville from Cape Town, who took the title in the end, beating Durban’s Glenwood Boys’ 5-2 in the final.

The defending champions, Hoerskool Stellenbosch, were eliminated in the semi-final stage by the eventual winners, while Glenwood beat St Benedict’s in the other semi.

The Curro Durbanville team comprised: Rudi van der Merwe, Okkie Kellerman, Kris van Wyk, Anthony Scholtz, Francois Kellerman, JD Malan and Calvin Jordaan. Elizma Schoonees was Coach.
