The fourth St. Benedict’s College Invitational Tennis Tournament was scheduled for 6 and 7 February 2010. Rain unfortunately interupted this event and the tournament had to be completed on Sunday, 14 February 2010. The format for this tournament was a Quarter Final Draw with a Comprehensive Backdraw, where all participating teams played three fixtures.
In the Quarter Finals the defending Champions Waterkloof beat CBC Boksburg (5-1), Cornwall Hill beat St. John’s (6-0), Trinityhouse beat King Edward VII School(by one set, after the tie ended 3-all) and the hosts St. Benedict’s beat St. David’s Marist Inanda (6-0).
Rain interfered with the Semi Finals and Backdraw Semi Finals and it was agreed to shorten the remainder of the tournament, where the doubles matches were excluded. In the Semi Finals Waterkloof beat Cornwall Hill (4-0) and St. Benedict’s went through to the Final by default, as Trinityhouse were unable to field a team on Sunday, 14 February. In the Backdraw Semi Finals CBC Boksburg beat St. John’s (4-0) and King Edward VII School beat St. David’s (3-1).
In the final playoffs, St. David’s beat St. John’s (4-0) in the 7th/8th playoff, CBC Boksburg beat KES (3-1) in the 5th/6th playoff, Cornwall Hill were automatically placed third and played an exhibition match against a very strong Invitational Team.
In the Final, Gerard Gruindelingh got Waterkloof off to a winning start by beating the Bennies’ number one, Ryan Laubser 7/6, 6/4, to remain unbeaten for the tournament. Waterkloof’s number two player,Ruan Nel, then, edged past Aidan Carrazedo 7/6, 6/7, 10/4 (Champions Tie-breaker). Bennies’ number three player, Joshua Roberts got the better of Egmond van Heerden 6/4, 6/1 to bring the hosts back into the Final. Bennies’ Captain and number four player, Luca Kotton beat Chris Everts 6/4, 7/5 to level the tie at 2 matches-all. Bennies were declared the winners by one set. Waterkloof’s Gerard Gruindelingh was acknowledged as being the “player of the tournament”.
